Broadcaster Peter Donaldson had died at the age of 70 following a battle with cancer.
He is best known for reading the BBC Radio 4 news from 1983 to 2012 and was widely recognised as the 'voice' of the station.
Donaldson's first job with the BBC was with Radio 2 in 1970, having worked previously with forces radio station BFBS and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
It was previously revealed that the broadcaster was involved in the government's plan for an emergency response after a nuclear attack.
Should the UK have come under fire, Donaldson would have read bulletins on the emergency Wartime Broadcasting Service.
The bulletins would have read: "This is the Wartime Broadcasting Service. This country has been attacked by nuclear weapons.
