Bradby explained on Twitter that he unsuccessfully attempted to rescue the man from his car, writing that he "dived in, tried to help [and] couldn't get him out. Completely shocking."

He then expressed his anger at a group of officials on the quayside, saying that only one of them went to try and rescue the elderly man.

"Of the 9 or 10 customs officials and police on the quay only 1 went in to try and get him out as the car sank," the broadcaster continued.

"The rest watched. Jesus... Am shaking with shock and anger. So much for the Greek holiday trade being business as usual."
