Mhairi Black's maiden speech in the House of Commons has gone viral.

The 20-year-old MP's words have struck a chord with Britons since she delivered the speech on Tuesday (July 14), and videos of Black in the House of Commons have reached a total of over 10 million views across various social media and news pages.

By Sunday (July 19), the speech had been viewed 5.5 million times on the Channel 4 News Facebook page, three million times on Buzzfeed UK and more than 650,000 on the SNP's own Facebook page.

In her speech, Black paid tribute to her predecessor Douglas Alexander and her constituency, criticised benefit sanctions and challenged Labour to work with the SNP to create an effective opposition to the Conservative Government.

The SNP's leader at Westminster Angus Robertson commended Black for her performance during her maiden speech, saying: "Mhairi's outstanding maiden speech was principled and passionate. She is without a doubt a huge credit to Paisley and to the SNP.

"The House of Commons listened in silence to its youngest member remind us all why we are sitting in our place and those we were elected to speak for - it is of no surprise that this message had resonance far beyond the walls of Westminster.
