Updated story: PS4 firmware 3.00 is now live and available to download.

The mandatory update - which weighs in at 250MB - will download automatically the next time the console connects online, adding a host of new features, including YouTube broadcasting, community features and PNG image uploads.

Original story: The PS4 is receiving a major firmware update this week with firmware 3.00.

From September 30, users will be able to stream gameplay to YouTube and upload 10-second video clips directly to Twitter.

New features include an Events app, allowing you to discover, participate in and watch events in the games you play most, while Communities lets you find players with similar tastes and interests.

You can now also group Friends into custom Favourite Groups, if you play with the same people on a regular basis in Destiny or Rocket League.

Other tweaks and changes include saving screenshots in a higher quality PNG format and sending Stickers through the Messages app (based on Uncharted 4, LittleBigPlanet and others).

Last year's significant 2.00 update this time last year introduced Share Play, YouTube uploading and USB playback.

Sony has said it looks to the users on how often it should update system firmware, following its regular updates in the PS3 era.
