Sonic fans won't be able to get their hands on Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice this year.

Originally penciled in as a 2015 winter release, Sega's forthcoming Nintendo 3DS exclusive is now scheduled to arrive sometime in 2016.

"The team at SEGA has decided to delay the release date of Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, which we announced for Nintendo 3DS earlier this year," the publisher said in a statement on the Sega Blog.

"In order to make sure the game has the time and polish needed, we're moving it out into 2016. No exact window from us, just yet – it'll be ready when it's ready!"

Developed by Sanzaru Games, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is a single-player game with collaborative gameplay components that share key characters, events and lore of the Sonic Boom franchise.

Players will see Sonic and his friends in familiar settings as they embark on a new adventure to battle Dr Eggman in addition to an all-new super villain known as D-Fekt.

The game also contains 'fire and ice' elements that enable new abilities to play out in special character moves and interactions with environments.
