An announcement was made by the game's developer Yacht Club Games shortly after rumours circulated yesterday (August 27) that the retro-styled action hero will be getting his own interactive figurine.
Using the amiibo on Wii U introduces a new co-operative multiplayer mode in the game, and opens the door for the Shovel Knight to be customised and upgraded with new abilities, powers and appearances that can be transferred between Wii U and 3DS versions.
The figure will also unlock amiibo exclusive stages that take advantage of new relics and abilities, and is teased to be supported in future Yacht Club Games and Nintendo releases.
As well as amiibo functionality, Wii U and 3DS versions will also receive a 'Plague of Shadows' expansion sometime this year, which will be coming to other editions of the game at a later date.
Shovel Knight is the first indie game to get its own figurine, with amiibo so far reserved for Nintendo's own roster of characters - such as Super Mario, Link from Zelda, Donkey Kong and Samus from Metroid - and Smash Bros fighters Sonic the Hedgehog and Pac-Man.
The Shovel Knight amiibo will launch later this year.

An interactive figure modelled after the character is to be released this November, according to a tweet by GAME that has since been deleted.
The tweet in question had an image of a product description saying the amiibo would be compatible with the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U versions of the Shovel Knight game.
It also teased that exclusive content can be unlocked by tapping the figure to the NFC reader of either system.
Developer Yacht Club Games and Nintendo have yet to confirm whether the amiibo is fake, but both are expected to make an announcement during PAX Prime this weekend.

If it is real, the Shovel Knight figure would be the first amiibo manufactured by a third party.
A physical version of Shovel Knight is launching this October for 3DS, Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
