It was clear Xbox One exclusive Halo 5: Guardians had done well, topping the recent industry charts and even beating the sales of the multiformat Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.

However, it now turns out that it even defeated James Bond on Spectre's first day at the box office.

Microsoft has confirmed that Halo 5: Guardians' day one gross revenue in the UK was £7.7m, which compares to a first day box office revenue in the UK for Spectre at £6.3m.

The video game industry is already massive, but it's growing by the day. Worth over £3.9bn in consumer spend in 2014 in the UK alone, games beat both video and music in terms of revenue last year.

Even digital sales of games outweigh the same in video and music, with games taking £1.5bn and video and music a combined total of £1.3bn.

With digital sales on the rise, these figures likely explain why the recent video game charts, which only account for physical sales, portray Halo 5 as selling much less than Halo 3.
