Paramount has "optioned the rights" to a television show based on EA's Battlefield series.

In a statement on the company's website, the cinematic giant announced a partnership with Anonymous Content, the studio behind True Detective and Mr Robot.

If you haven't seen either of the above, then there's good news: you should be excited. Both shows are a tour-de-force of television production with a gripping and gritty directorial style, so giving these creatives access to Battlefield's wartime settings could result in something fantastic.

One of the series' producers, Michael Sugar, is more than happy to work with an IP so enduringly popular.

"Battlefield has a tremendous built-in, engaged fan base, making it a highly coveted piece of IP primed for long-form adaptation," he said.

"Together with EA and Paramount TV, we'll develop the Battlefield TV series with the same commitment to robust storytelling that has made the game such a runaway success for nearly 15 years."

No further details are available, such as where in the Battlefield timeline the series will take place. Our bets are on a World War II drama, a la Band of Brothers. Oh, how we miss you, Sergeant Winters.

The next game in the series, Battlefield 1, takes place in the muddy trenches of the First World War and is set to release on October 21.
