The Wii U may not be the most popular console right now - especially with rumours of the Nintendo NX building fervour - but that doesn't mean there aren't some awesome Wii U games floating around.

If you're already rocking a Wii U or are considering picking one up on the cheap, you should know what the best Wii U games of the last six months or so have been.

Thankfully, you don't have to go trawling, because Digital Spy has done all the hard work for you. Plus, it's not all Mario-themed.

Here is our pick of the top 6 Wii U games:

1. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: TWILIGHT PRINCESS HD (MARCH 2016)

OK, so technically this is an HD remake of a Wii title, but it's a game that every Nintendo fan should play at least once in their lives. How many times can you say you've played a game where you spend half your time playing as Link in wolf form?

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD highlights the game's engaging storytelling and strong sense of adventure, both of which really are timeless. Add in some shrewd new features, such as graphical updates and well-thought-out uses for the Wii U Gamepad, and it's a shining example of a Wii U game.

Anyone who's played the original will still wolf down the revamp, and anyone who's yet to experience it will find this is the best way to get involved for the first time.

2. LEGO MARVEL'S AVENGERS (JANUARY 2016)

What better way to make the most of your Wii U than to have two of your major childhood experiences smash into each other in such a superb way? Lego Marvel's Avengers brilliantly captures the essence of every Marvel character it touches, while infusing them with TT Games' trademark Lego humour.

You get to play through events from the two Avengers movies here, as well as explore other locations such as Thor's homeworld of Asgard.

Every scene is treated with as much magic, authenticity and wit as the other Lego titles, so much so that this might just be the best Lego game yet - aside from Lego Dimensions. Hulk, Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow and the rest are sure to prove a hit with the entire clan.

3. LEGO DIMENSIONS (OCTOBER 2015)

The idea of toys-to-life games as a genre has existed for a few years now, thanks to the likes of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, but when Lego decided it wanted in on the action, that genre got blown wide open.

Thanks to Lego Dimensions' gloriously fresh take on the toy portal, where it actually becomes part of the game, brilliantly varied toy sets from Jurassic Park to Scooby Doo to Doctor Who and more - plus the fact you actually have to build the toys before you can play - really set it apart from the rest.

It invigorated a genre that we didn't even know needed a fresh injection of vigour.

4. SKYLANDERS SUPERCHARGERS (SEPTEMBER 2015)

There's no doubting that there have been quite a few Skylanders games, all asking for parental dosh for new toys and bases and games. But Skylanders Superchargers might be the one to rule them all - and you can use your old portal to save you some cash.

The base game thankfully comes with a generous amount of bonus content, with plenty of mini-games, sidequests and collectibles to discover regardless of whether you fork out for more toys. There's even a collectable card game called Skystones Overdrive that essentially gives you baby's first Hearthstone within Superchargers.

Buy some extra characters or vehicles and the game gets even bigger.

You'll find Superchargers revitalises the series by cranking up the variety and adding a number of racing forms into the mix.

5. SUPER MARIO MAKER (SEPTEMBER 2015)

We could hardly have a list of best recent Wii U games without a little dose of the red-hatted plumber. Mario is, after all, Nintendo's ultimate mascot and one that defined it as a games company in the early days.

Super Mario Maker is a glorious celebration of that history, giving you the power to create and access an infinite number of Super Mario levels. All you need to do is make them yourself, or tap into the ridiculously strong and talented community who have been doing so since the game launched last September.

The game has so much potential, the only thing that holds it back is your imagination. But we guess that won't be a problem. Just be prepared to lose days to your creations.

6. SPLATOON (MAY 2015)

If you're looking for something multiplayer-focused on Wii U, you'd be hard pushed to find anything better than the brilliant Splatoon. Its inky gameplay mechanics are stupidly fun, forcing you to switch between squid and humanoid "inkling" in order to traverse the map, restock your ink supplies and attempt to cover the most of the map with your coloured squid-juice before the opposing team.

There's a single-player campaign that's also engaging, but the various multiplayer modes are where the most fun is to be had.

It's a colourful alternative to the bland battlefields of the better-known first-person shooters.
