What a grind: Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 launches as 'a bad, buggy mess'

Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 - the return of the fan-favourite skateboarding series that hit the height of its popularity back in the PS1 and PS2 era - is leaving some poor first impressions, with critics calling it "bad" and "glitchy" as the game makes its debut Stateside.

One of the first videos from Eurogamer shows it to be a "mess", with skateboards falling through the floor and strangely floating through the air on a frightfully regular basis.

The footage was captured within the first hour of play on a PS4, after the game's sizeable patch - which is larger than the game itself - was installed.

Polygon also uploaded its own footage post-patch - after some issues getting it to load on an Xbox One - and piled on the misery by calling it "extremely buggy" and being straight up "really bad".

Despite releasing yesterday (September 29) in the US, most critics have only just got their hands on the game, with other early impressions also less than promising.

The more Tony Hawk I play the angrier I get. Currently torn between never playing it again and playing more to write a review.

Some full reviews have gone live, however. Destructoid gave the game 5/10, saying that while it "didn't outright hate" the game with some "flashes of brilliance", advised someone to take the reins from the game's developer Robomodo - which also worked on the poorly-received Ride and Shred.

Hardcore Gamer, meanwhile, gave it a 2/5, with repetitive missions that are "horrendously structured" and the game being "poorly optimised".

"Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5 could have been so much more. There were some expectations early on that maybe it could live up to its name, especially with Activision slapping a number on the end for the first time in well over a decade. Regrettably, the result is a mess," read the piece.

Sounds like a game you should bail on. If you're somehow still interested, Tony Hawk Pro Skater 5 is out this Friday (October 2) in Europe on PS4 and Xbox One, and November for Xbox 360 and PS3.
