Crackdown free to Xbox Live Gold members

Replacing Assassin's Creed 2, the latest title in Microsoft's 'Games with Gold' scheme is available as a free download until August 15.

It will reportedly be replaced by open-world zombie game Dead Rising 2 on August 16.

Previous 'Games with Gold' titles include Fable 3 and Defence Grid: The Awakening.

The rewards program, which was officially announced at this year's E3 gaming expo, will soon welcome Halo 3.

Developed by Realtime Worlds, Crackdown is an open-world action game in which a biologically-enhanced agent attempts to rid the fictional Pacific City of crime.

Players must use a combination of weapons, agility and super strength to infiltrate criminal hideouts and eliminate powerful crime lords.

It was followed by Crackdown 2 in 2010, which was developed by Scottish studio Ruffian Games.
