Veronica Mars has added Oscar-winning actor JK Simmons to its season eight cast.

The Whiplash star will play Clyde Prickett, an ex-con who served 10 years for racketeering, according to EW.

Clyde is now a fixer for Big Dick Casablancas (David Starzyk) – the richest real estate developer in Neptune, California.

Simmons and Starzyk's characters are old friends from prison. Clyde is described as "smarter and more dangerous" than Big Dick. He also has "a network of fellow ex-cons he can count on to keep his own hands clean".

After Kristen Bell confirmed in September that a revival really is going ahead, Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas revealed that many of the series' original cast will be returning for the new Hulu miniseries.

Alongside Bell's titular private investigator, Logan (Jason Dohring), Weevil (Francis Capra), Wallace (Percy Daggs III) and Richard Casablancas (David Starzyk) will all be back.

What to Read Next

The new series is will focus on a serial killer set loose in Neptune, with Mars Investigations on the case.

The official synopsis reads: "Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town's lifeblood tourist industry.

"After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son's killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave's wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast's answer to Daytona Beach."

Veronica Mars is set to return on Hulu in 2019.
