You know how the saying goes: you land one gig as notorious cult leader Charles Manson, then another one comes along at the same time.

Well, that's exactly what's happened to Justified actor Damon Herriman, as just days after it was confirmed he'd be portraying the murderer in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, it's now emerged that he's played the role before.

According to Collider, Herriman has been cast as Manson in Netflix's break-out hit Mindhunter, which is directed by David Fincher and stars Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany, and filmed his scenes for the show back in July.

Netflix declined to comment on the news, but Digital Spy has reached out to Herriman's reps.

Mindhunter sees Groff star as FBI agent Holden Ford and explores the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling, as Holden and his team interview imprisoned serial killers to understand how they think.

According to the reports, Mindhunter will feature Herriman as Manson in the 1980s, when he was already in prison, which lines up with the show's season 2 plans to address the real-life events of 1979-81, including the Atlanta child murders.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, however, will be set in the '60s, before Manson was imprisoned, as it tells the story of fictional down-on-his-luck TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) against the real-life murder of actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and her friends by the Manson family in 1969.

Before pulling double duty as Charles Manson in two major projects from big name directors, Australian actor Herriman was best known for portraying small-time crook Dewey Crowe in Justified, as well as starring in Breaking Bad, Scorpion and Top of the Lake: China Girl.

While Mindhunter's second season is yet to set a premiere date, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood will be arriving in US and UK cinemas on July 26, 2019, only a few weeks before the 50th anniversary of the Tate murders on August 8, 1969.
