FX in the US announced on Friday (June 1) that it has commissioned a third season of Legion from Noah Hawley, who also partners with the cable channel on Fargo. New episodes will air in 2019.

FX original programming president Eric Schrier announced: "Legion has redefined the superhero drama and exceeded all expectations as the intensity and revelation build through the second season.

"We are incredibly proud of Noah Hawley's achievement and are honoured to continue the series as it pushes the boundaries of conventional television storytelling.

"We are also grateful for the contributions of our executive producers, John Cameron, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, and Jeph Loeb with Marvel Television, as well as our outstanding cast and crew of this groundbreaking show."

This spin-off of the X-Men universe follows David Haller (Dan Stevens), son of Professor Charles Xavier, into his own mind as he tries to conquer his own powers and battle the demonic Shadow King (Navid Negahban).

Digital Spy recently chatted with Navid Negahban about what the future may hold for the Shadow King in a potential third season of Legion, and he wouldn't rule out a showdown with Professor X.

"There were some talks [before], but I don't know how real the talks were. Truly, I don't know. That's all up to Noah," he admitted.

Legion airs on Tuesdays at 10/9c on FX in the US. In the UK, it airs on FOX – and is also available via NOW TV.
