The time is right for New Girl to end, according to its star Zooey Deschanel.

The quirky series helped revitalise the sitcom format when it premiered in 2012, but all good things inevitably come to an end. For New Girl, that end will come with the finale of its seventh season this spring.

As cast members share their favourite (and least favourite) memories for the series, leading lady Zooey Deschanel is candidly addressing why it's necessary to walk away from New Girl at this point.

"It felt like we were ready for it to be the end, in a bittersweet way," Deschanel explained to Variety. "But it wasn't difficult. It was like finishing a marathon, like we did this really long run for seven years and we've played these characters a long time.

"It's not like there was any unfinished business. It felt like the right time to be ending it in the best way. I'm sad not to see my friends that I've worked with every day for so long, but it was all really positive in the end."

"I really wanted to do another season just so that we could send the show off properly. I appreciated that opportunity."

What to Read Next

With so many sitcoms being revived these days, a popular show like New Girl would seem ripe for reinvention in a few years — but Zooey has her doubts about whether it could work.

"I don't know, because it really is so much about single people," she argued. "In ten years, you would hope that people have sort of figured it out."

New Girl's final season airs on Tuesdays at 9.30pm on Fox. The show airs on E4 in the UK.
