Critics recently called for a renewal of One Day at a Time, emphasising the importance of its portrayal of a Latinx family dealing with circumstances surrounding PTSD, anxiety, religion, immigration and LGBTQ+ issues.

The National Hispanic Media Coalition published an open letter to Netflix after rumours circulated that the series might not be renewed, and other Hispanic and Latinx groups also joined in, signing a letter which included the Hispanic Heritage Foundation and National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts.

Recently, the cast and crew of One Day at a Time, including showrunner Gloria Calderon Kallett, urged viewers to rewatch episodes in an effort to get the show renewed.

After the announcement of the show's renewal, fans and cast members posted their excitement on social media.

Isabella Gomez, who plays Elena, wrote on Twitter, "YEESS!!! This is because of YOU all. Can't wait to bring you more Alvarez craziness and more representation!!"

Justina Machado, who plays Penelope, also responded to the good news on Twitter. "I'm so grateful to everyone who wrote about our show [sic] everyone who watched it over and over again and all of you beautiful people!!!! Thank you #dale"
