Things look pretty bleak for Rick, Maggie and their allies in a sneak peek at The Walking Dead's mid-season return.

A new trailer previews the battles to come for the group – reunited at last – while also teasing the impending demise of Carl (Chandler Riggs).

After he was bitten by a walker earlier in the season, Carl is fading badly in the latest promo, as he declares: "Before mum died, she told me that I was going to beat this world. You will."

A new teaser has also been released called 'No Guarantees', and the meaning of that phrase is hammered home with Carol (Melissa McBride) offering a grim view of a possible victory over Negan and the Saviours.

"Winning just means we get to tomorrow," she says. "Maybe one more night. After that, no guarantees."

In brief shots throughout the 30-second clip, we can see Tara (Alanna Masterson) turning a gun on Saviours double agent Dwight (Austin Amelio) while Rosita (Christian Serratos) takes down a gross swamp walker.

"This [next episode] sets very important ideas for the rest of the season," he said, "very important motivations, and it re-contextualises everything that's been going on and gives it a perspective that just can't be denied. It scrambles some things.

"But Carl's presence is felt very deeply in the story, throughout the story. It's a critical aspect of the season."

The Walking Dead is due to return for the second half of its eighth season on Sunday, February 25 in the US on AMC and on Monday, February 26 in the UK on FOX UK.
