Grey's Anatomy is set to include a big transgender storyline as the show casts Transparent's Candis Cayne.

The star will have a multi-episode arc in season 14, according to The Hollywood Reporter, in what is being described as a "groundbreaking" story.

Cayne will play a transgender character who comes to Grey Sloan for "revolutionising" vaginoplasty surgery.

"[The surgery] revolutionises the making of a vagina and we thought that was a really cool story, and Candis is playing a character inspired by something we read," Grey's Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff tells The Hollywood Reporter.

The storyline itself is inspired by the story of a trans woman called Hayley Anthony, who helped Jess Ting, the director of surgery at the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai, create a new procedure for vaginoplasty surgery.

As well as Transparent, Cayne has appeared in Dirty Sexy Money, Elementary and Nip/Tuck.

It's not the first time Grey's Anatomy has addressed trans issues recently, with Casey Parker (played by trans actor Alex Blue Davis) declaring that he was a "proud trans man" this season.

Meanwhile, the show's fans have shown concern that it might be killing off one of the original characters thanks to a trailer.

Grey's Anatomy airs on ABC in the US and on Sky Living in the UK.
