Any war comes with casualties, and it looks like the battle between Rick and Negan in The Walking Dead's upcoming eighth season will be particularly deadly.

Both sides have already lost soldiers (we still miss you Sasha!), but those fatalities seem to have only set the stage for even more major character deaths that many fans won't see coming.

"There are some big deaths this season, but I think they'll possibly catch people by surprise," showrunner Scott M. Gimple told Entertainment Weekly.

The interview took place as part of a celebration of The Walking Dead reaching its milestone 100th episode with its forthcoming season eight premiere.

And while viewers have seen disgusting well walkers, The Governor literally slice off poor Hershel's head and Negan swat Glenn and Abraham into mush in years past, All Out War apparently brings brutality that may even leave the most hardcore fans stunned.

"It's a f**king in-your-face, action-packed IV of adrenaline," according to Austin Amelio (aka Saviours double agent Dwight).

What to Read Next

"Season seven was the ramp-up and now this is the blastoff. The stuff that's happening is insane."

In addition to delivering us all sorts of new conflict, Amelio's co-star Andrew Lincoln (aka Rick) has also promised that season eight will harken back to The Walking Dead's glory days after a few divisive years.

"I think that last season was very painful for everybody," Lincoln admitted. "And now you get a certain sense of a reclaiming of the old show and the swagger."

One thing's for sure: The Walking Dead won't be dragging out the All Out War storyline — showrunner Scott M. Gimple recently promised that there will be a definitive winner and loser before the end of the season.

The Walking Dead launches its eighth season with a super-sized premiere on October 22 on AMC in the US and October 23 on FOX in the UK. Watch a trailer below:
