Fox is close to bringing back 24 once again, this time with its most radical format tweak yet.
The channel recently confirmed that it would not be renewing 24: Legacy, a soft reboot of the franchise in which a Jack Bauer-less CTU partnered with army ranger Eric Carter (Corey Hawkins) to take down a terror cell.
Because 24: Legacy stalled in the ratings during its run, producers Howard Gordon, Brian Grazer and Joel Surnow are now working on another reboot that won't even necessarily include a CTU or terrorist threat.
"We are really exploring what the future, the next version of 24 might be, maybe in more anthological storytelling," Fox chairman Dana Walden told reporters at the TCA press tour (via Deadline).
Without giving any firm details, her colleague David Madden explained: "[We're taking] the same kind of ticking clock format and apply[ing] it to something else. It will have the same urgency but may not be set in the CTU, it will have the same style and urgency but in a different venue."
This new idea continues Fox's long-term goal of successfully expanding the world of 24 beyond the adventures of Kiefer Sutherland's counter-terrorism agent Jack Bauer.

"I think that partly what is exciting is, we're opening up the possibility of it being anything where that 24-hour clock is at the most critical period of a story, so I don't want to limit them," Walden explained.
"It can only be an action-oriented show, maybe not. It can only be an emotional thing. The opportunity is for them to think their biggest thoughts."
There's no timeline yet for when Fox will make its final decision about the future of 24, although it seems a safe bet to assume that we'll know more by the next edition of the TCA press tour in the winter (at the latest).
The original 24 won 20 Primetime Emmy Awards and a pair of Golden Globes during its original run on Fox from 2001 to 2010.
