Who knows where Cult will fit into our overall ranking of American Horror Story, but one thing's for sure, this season will be the show's most controversial yet.

It's not the first time American Horror Story's incorporated real people into its plot – various serial killers have appeared, because of course they have – but it is the first time they've turned a true-life politician into a character.

... And it's President Trump. So, expect a lot of huge headlines, watercooler chatter and long-read blog posts when the new season starts in September.

To get you up to speed with the conversation, we've compiled everything you need to know about American Horror Story season 7.

American Horror Story season 7: Theme

First we got the tease, then we got the reveal – the title of season 7 will be American Horror Story: Cult, with showrunner Ryan Murphy confirming in February that the theme will be about the most recent US election. You know the one.

Trump will feature, but don't expect him to be a central character.

What to Read Next

Since then, Murphy's revealed the monster, which could be a creature or it could be a mask worn by Twisty the Clown (who's also been confirmed to return), as they have very similar grins.

Murphy sees Twisty as a perfect symbol of the current sense of post-election anxiety, and we agree - mainly because Twisty really stresses us out.

Murphy's also told us what the opening of episode one will involve. "The first 10 minutes of the season, this season, takes place in a very eerie macabre way on election night and there's something terrible that happens in the lives of our characters on election night as they're watching it all go down," he said.

Which sounds pretty exciting to us. We've already had a lot of into about this season, more than usual, especially from the traditionally mysterious Murphy, which certainly suggests he's proud of Cult.

And, intriguingly, Cult could be part of a fairly intricate masterplan to connect all of the seasons.

If you want more clues, don't ask the cast - they're keeping tight-lipped about Cult's shocks and surprises.

American Horror Story season 7: Cast

If you thought Trump was the only attention-grabbing name appearing in Cult, you'd be very wrong. Blogger-catnip Lena Dunham is making her first appearance on the show, so expect quite a bit of talk about her character, which has been confirmed as a real-life historical figure.

Alongside Lena are fellow newbies Billy Eichner and Colton Haynes. Scream Queens star (and Carrie Fisher's daughter) Billie Lourd will also be joining the gang.

But it's not all new faces, Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson will return, and their characters will be in a relationship from the sounds of things. Maybe Paulson's character has a thing for blue hair?

One thing's certain, Evan will be playing more characters than ever - and they'll all be cult leaders.

One person who won't be coming back? Lady Gaga. She featured heavily in Hotel and cameoed in Roanoke, but won't turn up in Cult, due to commitments on other projects.

Kathy Bates won't be back either, which makes us very sad indeed.

Still, Emma Roberts will return - she's agreed to do the show as a personal favour to Ryan Murphy.

If you're intrigued about how everyone will be styled on the show, Murphy's released some character images - each as intriguing as the last.

American Horror Story season 7: Premiere

American Horror Story Cultpinterest

This is one of the rare elements of American Horror Story that we don't have to speculate about at this stage – we know exactly when it's airing, and we're already counting the days.

On September 5 (in the US), all will be revealed. It will then follow in the UK on Friday, September 8 at 10pm on FOX.

American Horror Story season 7: Trailers

One thing American Horror Story is really great at – hype. Each season has had fairly amazing / unique promo campaigns, and Cult appears to be no different.

One thing though – don't look for any major plot clues, the trailers traditionally don't have loads to do with the show, certainly not in terms of narrative reveals.

Artwork for American Horror Story's seventh season also released today depicts a female clown whose brain has been replaced with ooey gooey honey dripping from a beehive — along with the mantra, "Be of like mind".

That is, unless this season involves bee-hive clowns attacking people with blue hair. Which, actually, might not be too far off what we know so far.

We've had a fairly detailed trailer - which we really don't advise watching if you've got a clown phobia.

Oh, and we've seen the (super creepy) new title sequence, a glorious return to the pre-Roanoke format.

We wonder if Murphy's incorporating all of those weird clown sightings that started in the States during the run-up to the election. One thing's for certain, we'll have to update this list of the scariest clowns in movies and TV the minute this show airs...
