John Oliver is back after a brief hiatus, and it's no surprise that he touched on the London terror attack that happened over the weekend.

After passing on his sympathies to everybody that was affected by the events on Saturday night at London Bridge and Borough Market, the Last Week Tonight host laid into some of the US media for the way they reported the news.

Channels such as CNN and Fox News said that the UK was "under siege" from the terror attack.

A New York Times headline saying that the nation was "reeling" was also picked up by social media – to hilarious results, with the hashtag #ThingsThatLeaveBritainReeling trending.

As Oliver pointed out, these news reporters couldn't be more wrong.

"Here's the thing," he said. "For the record, in no way is Britain under siege.

Oliver brought up the amazing hashtag as proof of "quintessentially British defiance".

"And if you need proof of this, just look at this footage of people being evacuated from the scene.
