24's original conceit was to depict an entire day – 24 hours – in real-time, across 24 episodes.
That's been lost in recent outings, with both 2014's Live Another Day and new event series Legacy spanning just 12 weeks.
Could the show's original format be restored? Corey Hawkins – who stars as new hero Eric Carter in Legacy – thinks so.
"It depends on what the story is," he told Digital Spy. "It hinges on our creators and it hinges on the storyline. It has to sustain."
Hawkins suggested that while a 12-episode run was right for Legacy, there's no reason the show couldn't run longer if it returns in future.
"I think it would be amazing to return to 24 episodes and to see if it can sustain that – I think it can. Once we crack open what's going on with Eric and what's going on in his head, I think there's a lot of story to be told and a lot of places he can go.

"You've got a guy who's literally lost, over the past six hours, all of his friends – all of his fellow soldier.
"So now we've got a man who... he still has something to lose, but he's in a different place, and I think subsequent seasons can sustain more complex storytelling, so we'll see."
Hawkins also opened up to us about the future of 24, saying he's keen to reprise Eric in future instalments.
24: Legacy continues on Wednesdays at 9pm on FOX.
