American Crime Story's fourth season will re-enact the Monica Lewinsky scandal, which saw then-president Bill Clinton face impeachment over his testimony about an affair with the White House intern.

It's also been confirmed that a star of previous American Horror/Crime Story seasons, Sarah Paulson, will be involved in the fourth run.

Speaking to E! News, creator Ryan Murphy said: "Sarah will be in it but she won't be playing Hillary (Clinton).

"That's earmarked for talks with somebody else. We're casting that now. I can't say what Sarah is playing, but it starts shooting at the end of this year."

The creator explained the show wouldn't really be about Hillary Clinton, instead focusing on "the rise of a certain segment of a right-wing group of people who despised the Clintons and used three women - Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp - to try and tear him down."

This news arrives before we've actually seen the second season of Ryan Murphy's drama series, which will be based around Hurricane Katrina and is expected around 2018.

We also of course haven't seen the third season, which will be based around the 1977 assassination of Gianni Versace. Do you think you might be getting ahead of yourself a bit, Ryan?

Well, the reason they've announced all the themes is they'll be flitting between filming both Katrina and Versace to fit in with the actors' availability.

Murphy explained: "We're striking while the iron's hot. But that was largely due to actors' availability.

"If you get Annette Bening, which I did and she says, 'You've got me these months', then that's when you do it."

The first season recounted The People vs OJ Simpson - the murder trial against the former American footballer - which was taken from a Jeffrey Toobin novel of a similar name. The fourth season will also be based on a Toobin work named A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President.
