Hulu has released the first trailer for its upcoming show The Handmaid's Tale, and boy, it is tense.

The highly anticipated adaptation – which is based on the book by award-winning author Margaret Atwood – was picked up straight away for a 10-episode series.

What to Read Next

The series takes place in Gilead, which is a futuristic but simplified world in which women's rights are a thing of the past and fertility issues are abound.

In order to keep the population up, in this world, government officials in a totalitarian society send young and fertile women — the "handmaids" — to affluent families.

They are then forced to help couples procreate via sexual servitude.

In the 30-second trailer, a raspy-voiced Offred (Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss) says ominously: "I had another name… but it's forbidden now. So many things are forbidden now."

We also see Gilmore Girls' Alexis Bledel being gagged and led away by two strong men and Offred getting brutally slapped by another woman.

Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, and Samira Wiley are also starring in the drama. The 100's Bruce Miller has penned the script, while original author Margaret Atwood has been hired as a consultant.

Atwood previously said: "I am thrilled that MGM and Hulu are developing The Handmaid's Tale as a series, and extra thrilled that the very talented Elisabeth Moss will be playing the central character.

"The Handmaid's Tale is more relevant now than when it was written, and I am sure the series will be watched with great interest. I have read the first two scripts and they are excellent; I can hardly wait to see the finished episodes."

The Handmaid's Tale will debut April 26 on Hulu.
