Although Gotham has not established Penguin's sexual orientation, Robin Lord Taylor is stamping down on any homophobia towards his character.
Speaking at the Rhode Island Comic Con with fellow Gotham castmate Sean Pertwee, Taylor, who plays Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin, didn't mince words when talking about Penguin's infatuation with Edward Nygma aka The Riddler (Cory Michael Smith).
Taylor first touched on the topic by saying he doesn't think Penguin is gay, adding that he is a "very emotionally fractured person" as well as "emotionally vulnerable".
After Penguin's parents died, it was Nygma who showed him respect. However, if it had been someone else - regardless of their gender - being kind to Penguin, he would have reacted similarly to how he did with Nygma, said Taylor.
Taylor then addressed people who have reached out to him saying that they have "no problem" with Penguin being "gay or queer" but that they take issue with Gotham "changing or altering the canon" of a character.
"And I have to say that's a bunch of horseshit," said Taylor, suggesting such people are not as upset about canon departures like Bruce and Selina growing up together as childhood friends in Gotham, or Tim Burton's Batman making it the Joker who killed Bruce's parents.

"What you're saying to me is, 'I am homophobic, and I am afraid of gay
people'," Taylor said.
"That is exactly what you're saying."
