Kunal Nayyar has said that he will continue to play Rajesh Koothrappali in The Big Bang Theory for as long as they'll have him - but only if the rest of the cast sticks together.

The actor made the promise to Digital Spy in London at The Asian Awards, where he was recognised for his Outstanding Contribution to Television.

"I wouldn't want to do it without the guys and girls," he said.

"That's our family. There's not one person in that cast who would want to walk away from what we have, because we know how special it is.

"And we know that it's very rare to be in a show that's run for this long, but also that we love each other.

"The writing is so great. We know what we have. And it's easy to fall. Money can destroy you, fame can destroy you.

"A lot of things can eat at you but we're very lucky to be a very tight-knit group. You never see us in tabloids. It's just about what's happening on our show.

"That's how we keep it and we love everything about it. We have one more year left on the contract and I'll keep doing it as long as they'll have me."

The Delhi-born actor also spoke of how he relates to the socially awkward Rajesh.

"I definitely have things in common with him. A lot of actors bring some part to their personality. I'm really excitable," he said.

"And sometimes I look at the world through innocent eyes to a fault. Just like him. I lived his life, he's a kid from Delhi just like me.

"I'm a Delhi boy who started out in Hounslow and ended up in LA."

Nayyar continued: "I get to play a character that I love - that I personally love.

"I think sometimes that if I had to work on a TV show and play a character that I really despised, it would be really difficult to wake up in the morning and play that character.

"It's incredible. Oftentimes you don't get the time to develop characters.

"We get the time and the writers have done such a great and delicate job of getting these guys out of their shells and into the world and it's really been amazing.

"I love Raj's innocence. I think he's a really sweet guy and he means really well."

While Nayyar is set to fulfil a personal dream as he prepares to tread the boards in the West End in The Spoils with Jesse Eisenberg, things are also going well for Koothrappali on the dating front.

"I'm dating two women - on TV I should add. Other than being married in real life, on television it's incredible," he said.

"I think it's fun. I think you've never actually seen a character do that. None of these guys have been dating two women and Raj is enjoying that a bit too much."

The Spoils will run at Trafalgar Studios from May 27 to August 13.
