The Simpsons star Harry Shearer is the voice behind some of the show's best-known characters. Over the last 33 years, the actor has portrayed the sinister Mr Burns, his PA Smithers, wholesome neighbour Ned Flanders, Principal Skinner - and many more.

But while Shearer is undeniably talented at playing different roles, he shared the one character he's glad he doesn't have voice anymore.

Appearing on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, the star was asked if he could replicate the voice of other characters in the animation, such as Homer or Bart Simpson.

"No. No, no. There are guys who I've done that I'm not allowed to do anymore. You know about that?" he replied.

He continued: "Which is kind of interesting. And there's one that I really hated doing that I don't have to do anymore, a family therapist called Dr Marvin Monroe."

Shearer went on to explain that the character first appeared in the "early" seasons of the show, when the titular family "goes to see him to discuss their problems".

"He has the most irritating possible voice that's just like, you know, fingernails on the wall, so you can't possibly get anything out of the therapy. But I had to do the voice that way, and it was always a pain," he reflected.

Dr Marvin Monroe was seemingly killed off-screen years later, with his death being subtly referenced during a Halloween special. Shearer shared that he only discovered Monroe's death while watching the episode.

"One day I'm watching the Halloween episode, the new Halloween episode, and they always start with a trip through a graveyard," he explained. "And you see funny names on the gravestones, and I saw Dr Marvin Monroe's name on the gravestone. They'd killed him off!"
