It seems that a comeback for Nina Dobrev on The Vampire Diaries could actually happen.

Dobrev signed off of the CW supernatural drama this past spring, after six seasons playing Elena Gilbert and her doppelgangers.

While the series is fresh off Dobrev's departure, CW president Mark Pedowitz is leaving the door open for a guest appearance.

"We would have loved Nina to stay," the CW boss said. "She did a great job for the six years she was on the show and she's welcome anytime she wants to come back.

"I have to give credit to [producers] Julie Plec and Caroline Dries in terms of [re-focusing the show] on Damon and Stefan… as well as having Kat Graham and Candice Accola's characters stepping up in ways we're very happy with."

Producers previously explained that they refused to kill off Elena to leave the door open for a Dobrev comeback.

The Vampire Diaries returns to The CW in the US on Thursday, October 8. ITV2 airs the show in the UK.
