Arrow may be about to undergo a bit of an overhaul - and the series panel at Comic-Con 2015 in San Diego offered up a few juicy hints as to what we can expect from its fourth season come October.

These are the highlights - from a new costume (and name?) for Oliver Queen's alter-ego, to new threat Damien Darhk, to Diggle suiting up!

1. We're heading back to the comics in more ways than one.

Never afraid of being overly dramatic, Stephen Amell kicked off the panel in style - and in character as Oliver Queen! But in his speech to the audience, he said a couple of things that made us sit up and listen.

For one: "Star City - not Starling City - Star City still needs saving." Are we possibly in for a bit of a name change to match the comics this season?

Then, of course, there was the killer: "All of you have come with us this far, and I would ask you to come just a little bit further... with the Green Arrow." Hooray!

2. The new suit isn't just a new suit, but a sign of where the show is going.

"I think we've always said that the progression for Oliver is very much from the Arrow to Green Arrow and this is the first real, real step in that direction," explained executive producer Greg Berlanti. "It expresses sort of who he's going to become more than necessarily who he's been in the series."

3. The show will have a lighter tone in future episodes - and Oliver might even make jokes.

"The show isn't going to suddenly become a comedy!" exec Andrew Kreisberg joked. "But [at the end of last season] you saw Oliver driving off into the sunset, so when the season starts he's in a much better place, he's happy, he's in love, and I think that that feeling kind of infuses all the characters.

"There's a little bit more fun this year, a little bit more humour, but it still takes place on rooftops and is still shooting arrows and still takes place in the rain."

Andrew's fellow executive producer Wendy Mericle added: "We actually get to have Oliver make some jokes in the lair which is a first, so that's really fun.

"It's been - as Greg was saying - part of Oliver's evolution and part of the journey of his character, to see him in love and see what it's like for him to be in a relationship and also be working with someone who's part of his superhero mission."

When a fan asked if Oliver would be a bit more sarcastic and silly in future episodes, Stephen replied: "I think that we are going to move in a more Green Arrow-y direction."

4. We're getting Damien Darhk in season four - but that's not all.

How did the producers decide to introduce Damien Darhk? "It really started with a conversation with [exec] Marc [Guggenheim] about what villains would come into Arrow and there's a big one coming, another big one coming, beyond Damien Darhk," DC's Geoff Johns teased.

"But Damien Darhk's a villain from the Titans and he's got a big crew behind him. But in Arrow there's a lot of characters coming up that people won't really guess that are going to come from the DC Universe that are going to come soon."

Any other hints? Marc gave us some: "We've got a gentleman who will be joining Damien – Batman fans know him as Anarky, which we're really excited about. One of the things that we like to do on Arrow is tell the secret origins of various characters.

"You got to see how Roy Harper became Arsenal, you got to see how Laurel became the Black Canary, Thea became Speedy. This year we want to introduce a new character to the Arrow show – Mr Terrific."

You might have heard about the introduction of Mr Terrific - he's being played by Ben & Kate star Echo Kellum. "He's going to work with Felicity, be a good friends of hers," Geoff said. "We're often asked when we're going to add another LGBT character to the show and our version of Mr Terrific happens to be gay for anyone that cares about that kind of stuff."

5. Willa Holland cried when she tried on her Speedy suit.

"Being able to do justice to the origin story of a female character going from troubles to being lied to to trying to grow up and get her stuff together, failing at it a little bit, then being lied to a bit more here and there, having her father come into her life, maybe thinking it's going to be okay and then it fails some more, and then she gets lied to again," she said.

"It's just all this stuff she goes through but normally when you see that on television or film it's usually a woman who doesn't really come back up from that so it's been absolutely beyond an honour to play a strong female character who has come out the other side and is in some red cladded leather. It's been absolutely the greatest thing that's ever happened in my life and I had tears of joy when I tried on the outfit for the first time, guys."

6. John Barrowman won't completely be ditching the hoods now that he's Ra's al Ghul...

John, who was wearing Ra's' ring, admitted that he didn't know if he'd be in for any costume changes. "That's what I think is exciting about being part of the show - I don't like to know what's going to happen too far ahead," he said. "I like to be surprised because I'm a big nerd and geek myself, and I get the scripts and go, 'Argh, you're kidding! It's totally awesome!' So I'm not sure what's going to happen.

"Obviously I do know some things but we'll see." But Marc had this to say: "You're going to keep the long cape but you're going to get back into the hood for episode three."

7. Diggle is - finally - getting a suit this season.

David Ramsey was rocking a bit of facial fuzz on the panel, but admitted that he didn't know if we'd see it in the show, grinning: "I don't know if I'm going to be able to keep the scruff because I don't know if it will go well with my new helmet…" Yep, he's officially getting a costume!

As Marc explained: "One of the things that we started to feel last year and we've addressed this on the show is Diggle's got a life, he's got a daughter, and if he's going out there surrounded by people in masks and he's John Diggle, it's not the greatest idea on his part.

"So I think Oliver's advice last year, 'Dude, cover up your face a bit', was well taken." ("That and David said he would kill us if we didn't give him a costume this year," Andrew joked, as David admitted: "Yeah, I did say that.")

8. You might get to see surprising pairings of characters this season.

"I'd love to see more sparring between Malcolm and Felicity, because some of the stuff that we got to do last season, it was quite fun to have that and see her stand up," John said.

"When she was giving the orders and Malcolm was going, 'Okay, I'll go and do that now', it was kind of cool. Strong female roles are totally awesome – they're just awesome." And in fact, they aren't the only duo who might be getting more screen time together.

"There's no-one within the regulars of the series that are in any way being kept in the dark or think that Oliver Queen is just Oliver Queen or Sara Lance is just Sara Lance," Stephen pointed out.

"Everyone knows everyone's business and that leads to I think some new interactions that we'll get this year like Malcolm and Felicity and Laurel and Thea a little bit more and all of this good stuff. The new stuff in the fourth season is good."

Arrow returns for its fourth season on October 7 on The CW in the US.
