Arthur Darvill has been added to the cast of the upcoming Arrow and Flash spinoff for The CW.

According to Deadline, the Doctor Who actor will play Rip Hunter, a DC Comics time-travelling superhero who has never been explored on television before.

He joins Ciara Renée as Hawkgirl, making up two of three newly-cast roles for the project.

Rip Hunter puts on a charming and witty facade in the spinoff, in order to hide the strains of being responsible for history.

The character first appeared in DC Comics for Showcase #19 in 1959 and was central to his own comic book series Rip Hunter... Time Master between 1961 and 1965.

Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/The Atom), Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory/Heat Wave) and Victor Garber (Dr Martin Stein) will also return for recurring appearances in the series, following stints in Arrow and The Flash.

Darvill has most recently appeared in Broadchurch's second series and played Rory Williams in Doctor Who from 2010 to 2012.
