Batman fans may be treated to more episodes of The Penguin, according to executive producer Matt Reeves.

Reeves directed 2022's The Batman — where Colin Farrell's Oz Cobb makes his first appearance — and supervised the writing for the show with creator and showrunner Lauren LeFranc. Despite being originally billed as a miniseries, The Penguin could return for a new season, digging deeper into Gotham City's criminal underbelly.

"Yeah, we're talking to [showrunner] Lauren [LeFranc] about doing another season," he told Variety. "That was a special experience. I just feel really fortunate."

"These characters don't belong to me; they belong to the world," he added. "It comes down to whether you can approach them in a way that expresses something personal."

No official word yet as to whether The Penguin season 2 could become a reality anytime soon, but the multiple awards nominations, including three Golden Globe nods, are certainly an indicator of the show's acclaim.

Alongside Farrell, the stacked cast also features Cristin Milioti (of How I Met Your Mother fame) as Sofia Falcone, as well as Rhenzy Feliz, Mark Strong, Michael Kelly, Deirdre O'Connell, Clancy Brown, Carmen Ejogo, to name but a few.

Discussing the show last month, Reeves weighed in on why Batman, played by Robert Pattinson in the movie, doesn't intervene in the war for control of Gotham City.

"This was a time of great turmoil in the city, it's literally the week after what happened," Reeves explained in a chat with Digital Spy. "Much of the city is in desperation, so police can't get everywhere, there's crime everywhere, it's a very, very dangerous time.

"[Batman's] out there trying to grapple with the aftermath of everything that happened, which to some degree he blames himself for."

However, if The Penguin returns for chapter two, it sounds like the Caped Crusader will definitely be involved. In November, the series ended with a cheeky Bruce Wayne tease, as the iconic Bat Signal lights up the Gotham sky in the final scenes.

The Penguin airs on Max in the US, and NOW and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
