The Simpsons spoilers follow.

The Simpsons has killed off beloved character Larry the Barfly after 35 years.

The long-running animated series is currently airing its 35th season, with the latest episode having seen Moe's Tavern regular Larry – who is often seen drinking in silence with Homer and co – drop dead at the bar.

Following Larry's untimely death, Homer, Moe, Carl and Lenny all showed up at his funeral to pay their respects.

However, Homer began to question if they were "terrible people" after they realised that they knew almost nothing about their late 'friend' despite spending so much time with him.

Their guilt was only worsened when Larry's mother revealed that her son would often talk about his "best friends" at Moe’s Tavern, before asking them to share some "fond memories" of her son.

After the long-time drinking buddies conjured up a fake fishing story, Larry's mother gave the group a photo of them with Larry, whose last name was officially revealed to be Dalrymple.

With that, the four friends headed to Larry's "special place" in Serenity Falls to spread his ashes.
