Netflix's live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender is one step closer towards coming back, as it's now been confirmed (via Tudum) that season two is officially in production.

It was previously announced back in March that the hit series had been renewed for a second outing on the streaming platform. And that wasn't the only good news – Netflix has also confirmed we'll be getting a season three to boot.

At this point, we've also started to get plenty of exciting updates about the next batch of brand-new episodes, including a first look and new character details.

So here's everything we know so far about Avatar: The Last Airbender season two.

When is Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 coming to Netflix?

As we previously noted, the streaming giant has already announced that Avatar's live-action version has been confirmed for a second (and third) season.

This news was shared with a poster to X/Twitter, along with the caption: "The Avatar will return!! seasons 2 & 3 of AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER are coming!"

The artwork, which features a blue arrow symbolising water pointing towards an earth symbol marked with the number two and a fire symbol with the number three, reads: "Aang's journey continues."

What about the show's timeline and a possible release date?

Well, it took just under a year for the first season of Avatar: The Last Airbender to film. Production kicked off in November 2021, with the premiere season wrapping on June 17, 2022. However, it didn't actually make it to the streaming platform until February 2024.

Netflix's One Piece which is similar in scale and ambition – took a whole year to make it to the streaming site post-wrapping.

It's all guesswork at this stage as to when season two of Avatar: The Last Airbender will be released to the world. But we'll keep you posted with news and updates.

Who is in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 cast and which characters will be added?

New season two cast and characters have been revealed for The Last Airbender season two, including:

  • Rekha Sharma (Yellowjackets) as Amita
  • Crystal Yu (Doctor Who) as Lady Beifong
  • Amanda Zhou (The Handmaid's Tale) as Joo Dee
  • Chin Han (Mortal Kombat) as Long Feng
  • Hoa Xuande (The Sympathizer) as Professor Zei
  • Justin Chien (The Brothers Sun) as King Kuei
  • Kelemete Misipeka (Sons of Thunder) as The Boulder
  • Lourdes Faberes (The Sandman) as General Sung

It was also revealed in September 2024 that a fan-favourite character will join the show's second season. In a teaser video unveiled at Netflix's Geeked Week event, we got a glimpse at an Earthbender named Toph Beifong – who will be played by Miya Cech.

Show bosses Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani have told Netflix's Tudum that they are excited to get the cast back together for season two.

"We're looking forward to working with all of our actors again and digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as their journey continues in season two," they said.

"We are going to show the real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original, and explore some of the stories that the animation didn't. Mainly – we're looking forward to seeing our gang all together again."

Ian Ousley, who plays Sokka, and Dallas Liu, who plays Prince Zuko, have spoken about preparing to return to their roles.

As for other returning cast members, Gordon Cormier will be returning as Aang, along with Kiawentiio as Katara.

From this point on, Avatar: The Last Airbender spoilers follow.

We expect a solid redemption arc from Zuko's return. Dallas Liu's character spent much of season one trying to capture the Avatar to present as a gift for his conquering Fire Nation king/father Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim).

Of course, Zuko will need the guiding hand of his uncle Iroh, which means Paul Sun-Hyung Lee should be back.

Elizabeth Yu's Princess Azula was the perfect thorn in Zuko's side, even from far away, and will likely continue to be so in season two.

Commander Zhao's fate was ambiguous at the end of season one – and we all know what happened to that character in the anime.

However, the live-action version may tread a different path, which means Ken Leung could reprise his role once more – and the actor has previously spoken about ways in which we could see more of Zhao.

What will happen in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2's plot?

Show bosses have kept quiet about specific plot and storyline details for Avatar season two, but they have teased what fans can expect from the show's return.

"For the Gaang, fans can expect more brilliant plans from Sokka [Ousley], even more masterful bending from Katara [Kiawentiio], Appa and Momo to be as fluffy as ever, and Aang [Gordon Cormier] to learn a new bending form (or two)," they told Tudum.

Showrunner Albert Kim told Entertainment Weekly in January 2024 that they had to "design this first season, especially, to accommodate the possibility of some time elapsing between the first and the second season".

"The comet [from the original animation] was their ticking clock. We removed that particular ticking clock from our show for now because we couldn't know exactly how old our actors would be for the subsequent seasons," Kim explained.

"We definitely thought about that going into season one so that we can accommodate for puberty, adolescence, time passing — all of those fun things that happen to real-life human beings that don't happen to animated characters."

Thanks to the original source material, there is a rough roadmap for the live-action anime to follow in terms of how the story unfolds.

Season one of the Netflix iteration ended with Aang and the Waterbenders' defeat of the Fire Nation, who invaded the Northern Water Tribe.

However, their attack on the North was but a distraction to steer the Avatar's attention away from their real target: the Earthbenders of Omashu.

Omashu is now under the Fire Nation's control, which already spills over into the original narrative of season two.

Without giving away too many spoilers, we would expect Aang to pick up a few more bending skills outside of airbending, and perhaps to receive more tutelage from former Avatars on how to combine his powers to tap into the Avatar state.

We also anticipate that things will soon come to a head between Zuko and his sister, Azula, who is hellbent on usurping him on the way to being next in line for the throne.

Fire Lord Ozai and Aang have yet to come face to face and while the Avatar is nowhere near ready to best the Fire Nation conqueror, that doesn't mean he won't be forced to try.

Basically, season two of Avatar: The Last Airbender should be filled with a lot of epic fight scenes and sweeping, emotional storylines on the way to testing what Aang is made of.

"There are so many strong female characters – like Toph [another young bender]," Aro said. "I’m also looking forward to leveling up with the cast because they are willing to put the time in as they've proven.

"There's going to be so much more wirework… it's only going to get bigger, and we're really excited to do that."

The new episodes could potentially have a slightly different feel from season one, given that two new showrunners have been brought on board. Albert Kim, who was in charge for season one, is stepping down, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.

Kim is staying on as an executive producer but is handing over showrunner responsibilities to Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani.
