Line of Duty's Kelly McDonald has landed a role in the new Netflix crime series Department Q.

The actress, who played Jo Davidson in season six of the hit BBC series, is one of many names cast in the upcoming show, based on the novels of the same name by Danish author, Jussi Adler-Olsen.

Downtown Abbey star Matthew Goode, The Queen's Gambit's Chloe Pirrie and Jack Ryan actor Alexej Manvelov are also confirmed to star, with Leah Byrne of Call The Midwife fame additionally appearing in a lead role.

"After a violent incident turns DCI Carl Morck's (Goode) life upside down, the emotionally scarred detective is charged with setting up cold case unit, Department Q, upon his return to work," teases the show synopsis.

"At first, the disillusioned cop is happy to waste his days away, but his detective instincts are ultimately reawakened and his new department becomes a magnet for a crew of misfits and mavericks."

Macdonald plays Dr Rachel Irving, a therapist charged with getting officers back on the front line after experiencing a trauma. It hints that she and Carl "develop a deeper connection" as they learn more about each other.

Meanwhile, actress Chloe Pirrie portrays Crown prosecutor Merritt Lingard, who's path collides with Carl ahead of the biggest case of her career.

Alexej Manvelov and Leah Byrne both star as colleagues of Carl, with Akram Salim (Manvelov) described as a former Syrian police officer who accepts a role as Carl's assistant at Edinburgh's police station after failing to get work as a cop.

Having recently suffered a mental health-related breakdown herself, Byrne plays top police cadet Rose, who appeals to Carl in his new department in a bid to prove herself once again.

Th supporting cast includes Guilt stars Mark Bonnar and Jamie Sives, Harry Potter's Shirley Henderson and Kate Dickie of Inside Man fame.

Filming for the series is currently underway in Edinburgh, with no details shared as yet of a possible release date.

Department Q will air on Netflix.
