Billions spoilers follow.

Billions is bringing back Damian Lewis in a major surprise for the show.

When Billions first launched, Lewis was the anchor of the show in his role as Bobby Axelrod, a New York hedge fund boss being investigated by United States Attorney Chuck Rhoades (The Jungle Cruise's Paul Giamatti).

Bobby was memorably written out of Billions in the season 5 finale, when the financial scammer fled to Switzerland to avoid prosecution from Rhoades's team.

Axe left his business empire to one-time rival Mike Prince (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania's Corey Stoll), but it looks like we haven't seen the last of him, after all.

Showtime has released an official synopsis for the seventh season of Billions that confirms Prince and Axe may be on a collision course.

The synopsis reads: "In season seven, alliances are turned on their heads. Old wounds are weaponized. Loyalties are tested. Betrayal takes on epic proportions. Enemies become wary friends. And Bobby Axelrod returns, as the stakes grow from Wall Street to the world."

Lewis is expected to appear in half of the upcoming season, while viewers will also be seeing much more of Toney Goins as Phiillip, as the actor has been promoted to the main cast.

Production is currently underway on the hit financial drama, with the seventh season confirmed to be premiering on Showtime later this year. In the UK, you can watch the show on Sky Atlantic.

Lewis has kept busy since taking a break from Billions, playing the real-life MI6 intelligence officer Nicholas Elliott on the ITVX miniseries A Spy Among Friends.

The six-part series dramatised the real scandal surrounding double agent Kim Philby's exposure as an asset of the KGB in the 1960s and the subsequent international incident.
