Star Trek: Picard boss Terry Matalas has opened up about why some of the major characters of the show were cut from the third season.
In an interview with Digital Spy, the showrunner explained that the show wanted to give every character their proper due, so they had to make some concessions.
“It's really about real estate, right? You want every character to have its due and it was a very specific story we wanted to tell... in order to do that you have to have the room to do it,” he said.

“And so for those reasons, you needed to, you needed to have the room. So we sort of had to reinvent the show a little bit. And go a different direction,” Matalas added.
The new season sees Next Generation cast members reprising their role for an epic adventure. The cast includes Sir Patrick Stewart, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Brent Spiner, who is already part of the cast.
Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd also return as Seven of Nine and Raffi Musiker, while new cast members include Pulp Fiction's Amanda Plummer, Mica Burton and NCIS: Los Angeles and Cruel Summer's Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut.

Currently, the third season of the show is supposed to be its final season, but Patrick Stewart has said that there is potential for more.
Speaking during the Paramount+ day on the TCA winter press tour, he said (via Deadline): “There is still enormous potential for matters in what we can do and there are doors left open and we didn't close all of them.
Picard's co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman also agreed, saying: "If the show blows the doors off the place, and we're certainly hoping it will as we're very proud of season three, who knows?".
Star Trek: Picard airs on Paramount+ in the US and on Prime Video in the UK.
