Star Trek: Picard may be continuing past its third season – at least that's what its star Patrick Stewart hopes for the future.

The X-Men actor reprised the role of Star Trek: The Next Generation's fan-favourite, Captain Jean-Luc Picard, for the new series. Picard first premiered in 2020, and what is currently earmarked to be its third and final season is due to premiere soon.

Speaking during the Paramount+ day on the TCA winter press tour, however, Stewart hinted that more missions could be in store for his Starfleet admiral.

"There is still enormous potential for matters in what we can do and there are doors left open and we didn't close all of them," Stewart explained (via Deadline).

Picard's co-creator and executive producer Alex Kurtzman seemed to be on the same page, as he said that "anything is possible".

"If the show blows the doors off the place, and we're certainly hoping it will as we're very proud of season three, who knows?" he continued.

The third season will see several Next Generation cast members reprising their roles for what's set to be an epic adventure.

Alongside Stewart, the third chapter will see LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden and Marina Sirtis joining Brent Spiner, who is already part of Picard's cast.

Jeri Ryan and Michelle Hurd are also back as Seven of Nine and Raffi Musiker respectively.

The cast for the new season also features Pulp Fiction's Amanda Plummer, Mica Burton and NCIS: Los Angeles and Cruel Summer's Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 will premiere on Paramount+ in the US on February 16, with episodes released weekly. Viewers in the UK can watch the new season on Prime Video from February 17.

Previous seasons are available to stream on the same platforms.
