Hawkeye spin-off series Echo has suffered a disappointing update, according to showrunner Marion Dayre.

The series was expected to be coming out within the next few months, but the show's release will now be delayed until late 2023. Dayre was talking to Ben Blacker on the podcast The Writers Panel (via Collider) when the topic of release dates came up.

"This [the podcast] comes out in a week or two. When does Echo premiere?" Blacker said. Dayre replied: "That will be probably a year from when this comes out."

Echo is a spin-off from the Disney+ series Hawkeye and will follow Alaqua Cox's titular character (otherwise known as Maya Lopez) returning to her hometown in order to confront her past and reconnect with her Native American roots.

Dayre did talk enthusiastically, however, about working with Marvel for the series, calling it a "crash course" in how to do things.

"It was kind of a crash course, you know, because I came in as a co-EP [executive producer] and then changed... that changed a little bit, and so I didn’t start there at the ground level, but really like shifting and changing a process to work with deadlines," Dayre said.

"Like, Better Call Saul very much uses a brick-by-brick process where we essentially break each episode three times. You do sort of a general overall break, and then we lay out some arcs, and then we go back in and brick by brick."

The show will feature Zach McClarnon as William Lopez, Maya's deceased father, as well as Charlie Cox's Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk AKA Kingpin, who also showed up in Hawkeye.

It was in the Hawkeye series that we were introduced to Cox's Echo, who is one of Marvel Comics' very few deaf characters. This will be Marvel Studios' first-ever deaf lead in a TV series or film.

Hawkeye is streaming on Disney+.
