Dangerous Liaisons has been cancelled for a second season as the network back-pedals on their previous decision.

Season 2 of the Starz costume drama, which stars Alice Englert and Nicholas Denton as the Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont respectively, will no longer go ahead despite being renewed ahead of its season 1 premiere.

Remaining episodes for its first season will continue to air as previously scheduled, and according to Deadline, the series may be able to find another home as "executive producers are actively shopping the period drama around".

Failing to impress with its ratings, Dangerous Liaisons lacked the viewership required for renewal with its premiere amounting to 88,000 people on the day of its release.

The prequel series based on the events of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' 1782 novel 'Les Liaisons dangereuses' tells the origin story of Englert's Marquise de Merteuil and Denton's Vicomte de Valmont.

The two characters were famously portrayed by Glenn Close and John Malkovich in the 1988 film adaptation which was followed by the 1999 re-imagining Cruel Intentions starring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The series creators Harriet Warner and Colin Callender previously sat down to talk to Digital Spy about the representation of positive LGBTQ relationships in the series.

"It's wonderful. For me, as a queer woman, I think it's kind of inherent in everything that I write. I think it's very hard to tell any story without reaching for that," Warner said.

Discussing their hope for a second season Colin Callender said: "I am working overtime to persuade Lionsgate and Starz to commit to a second season, and Harriet has fantastic ideas for where the second season would go."

Dangerous Liaisons is available to stream on STARZ in the US and Lionsgate+ in the UK.
