The trailer for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard has been released, offering a surprise return for one character.

The clip, which dropped as part of New York Comic-Con, shows Jean-Luc’s (Patrick Stewart) reunion with the USS Enterprise.

At the end of the trailer, we get a glimpse of LeVar Burton’s Geordi La Forge, who menacingly calls “Lore” in reference to Data’s android sibling.

Burton hasn’t played the character since the 2002 film Nemesis, which served as the conclusion of the arc that began with The Next Generation.

Picard, which began in 2020, revived the stories, focusing on the titular character after he retired from Starfleet.

In addition to Burton, other returning stars from The Next Generation include Michael Dorn (Worf), Jonathan Frakes (William Riker), Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher) and Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi).

A new villain was also introduced in the trailer, with Amanda Plummer starring as the mysterious Vadic, an adversary who seemingly has history with Picard.

Ahead of the final season, which premieres in February 2023, showrunner Alex Kurtzman spoke of the returning classic characters, saying: “When we first started, of course the first instinct is to bring back the entire crew of The Next Generation.

“I think we took two seasons to earn that return. What we didn't want to do was have the crew return and do sort of cameos, we actually wanted everybody to have really significant roles and whet appetites a bit to see them together.”

Despite fans' excitement at the inclusion of favourites, showrunner Terry Matalas teased that major characters could potentially be killed, tweeting that “safety [is] not guaranteed”.

Even though the third season will be the last, Patrick Stewart confirmed that he would be open to making another Star Trek film, saying it would be an “exciting prospect”.

Star Trek: Picard airs on Paramount+ in the US and on Prime Video in the UK. Season 3 will premiere on February 16, 2023.
