The Big Bang Theory ran for 12 seasons, meaning some mistakes were bound to happen.

But executive producer Steven Molaro revealed one mistake that's more than just a filming continuity error.

During season 1, Leonard daydreams about saving Penny by pulling open the broken elevator doors, holding her, and then abseiling down the cables one-handed while kissing her.

Eagle-eyed viewers may have spotted that a picture of the scene later appeared on Penny’s fridge. However, the moment never actually existed.

"It makes me crazy because technically that photo was from the fantasy sequence, so it shouldn’t be a real photo on her refrigerator," Molaro reveals in the book The Big Bang Theory: The Definitive, Inside Story of the Epic Hit Series.

"Unless Leonard said, 'Hey, we should go re-create this image I have from a dream of mine and get in the elevator shaft and have somebody take a picture of us,' it doesn’t belong there."

Kaley Cuoco, who played Penny, added: "And Leonard doesn’t have his glasses on, either!

"All these things are wrong with the photo, but you couldn’t really tell where we were, so it worked."

But the episode remains special to both Cuoco and co-star Johnny Galecki, who played Leonard.

The couple both had crushes on each other and said filming while being close together was a "turning point" in their relationship, with them going on to secretly date for two years.

"I think we fell a little in love in that elevator shaft," Cuoco said.

"I was crushing so hard on him. So much so that I was like, 'Get me out of here', because he had to hold me up and we had to do this really close thing.

"Even my cheeks were really red. I was super nervous and kept thinking, 'Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God'. I was just a nervous wreck being that close to him in the moment."

Galecki added: "At that point, both she and I knew that something mutual was felt, and that it was going to be more of a distraction from the work to try and continue to ignore it than to actually recognise it and surrender to it."

The Big Bang Theory aired on CBS in the US. You can buy the complete boxset now on DVD and Blu-ray.
