His Dark Materials has just given fans a glimpse into its much-anticipated third season.

Taking to Twitter, the show's official account released two stills from the upcoming season to get viewers excited.

One photo showed Simone Kirby, who plays Mary Malone on the show – the astrophysicist who is told she must play the role of the serpent for the second Adam and Eve. In the still, Malone is seen looking at something in the distance with what could be interpreted as a concerned look.

In the second photo, Lyra (Dafne Keen) and her best friend Will (Amir Wilson) are seen laying side by side with Lyra turned away, sporting a stern yet troubled expression.

"All beginnings have endings. Season 3 is coming," the tweet wrote.

When we last saw these characters, Dr. Malone was gazing at a waterfall while Will had taken off to go look for a missing Lyra, who was lying unconscious inside Mrs. Coulter's trunk.

The show's third and final season is based on Philip Pullman's third book of the His Dark Materials trilogy The Amber Spyglass.

BBC has yet to confirm an official release date for the season, but it is expected to premiere sometime towards the end of 2022.

However, despite the heartbreaking news of the show's looming ending, its executive producer Jane Tranter revealed to Radio Times earlier this month that her initial hope had been to span the series over multiple seasons.

"Honestly, I would have told it across nine seasons if I could have done. There are so many stories that we weren’t able to do," she said.

Ruth Wilson, who plays Mrs. Coulter on the show, had also previously admitted that saying goodbye to the show had been a very difficult affair for everyone involved.

In an interview with the Radio Times at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival, she revealed: "We said goodbye to it last year. And it was sad. It was really sad to say goodbye to monkey and [lead puppeteer] Brian [Fisher] and everyone."

His Dark Materials airs on BBC One in the UK and HBO in the US.
