Never Have I Ever spoilers follow.

Never Have I Ever recently dropped its third season on Netflix, culminating in lead character Devi going over to Ben's house to claim on his offer to help her lose her virginity.

Her decision is partially influenced by her friends all getting their v-cards stamped, and on the whole it feels like season 3 has a lot more discussion about sex than previous seasons.

Lead star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan agrees with that assessment, telling Digital Spy in an exclusive interview that "it's very important. Sex is a big deal, like Kamala says.

"One of my favourite scenes is the scene between Kamala and Devi, where Kamala is saying, 'It's a very intimate thing. Is he pressuring you?' She's having a real talk with her. It's a real talk, because you can see that Devi is feeling safe enough that she can say, 'Is it going to hurt down there?'

"She's feeling safe enough to ask that and sometimes in conversations, especially when we're young, we don't feel safe enough to ask that because we feel we're going to be judged. We're going to be seen one way or the other. You're either an absolute slut, or you're a goodie-two-shoes virgin.

"I'm speaking as a woman here of the good old woman experience – it's better to have an open conversation, especially with people you can trust and your friends. Just understanding that everyone's at a different pace with it, and that's perfectly OK. I think it's awesome that the three girls lose their virginity at different times."

Ramakrishnan also talked about how the show is part of TV and film changing in tandem with how conversations about sex in general are evolving, with less of a focus on a "toxic" male perspective. You can read the entire lengthy interview with her here.
