DC's upcoming slate is up in the air following recent news about Warner Bros Discovery's new boss cancelling the close-to-complete Batgirl HBO Max movie.

While the fate of things like Doom Patrol, Titans and announced projects like Justice League Dark are still unknown at this time, the Constantine series – which Star Wars director JJ Abrams' production company Bad Robot is attached to – is apparently safe.

A report by Variety on the state of DC on screen claims that producers have been scouting locations for filming, and are looking at an early 2023 production start.

Deadline, meanwhile, states that the people behind the show are looking for a diverse lead. Writer Guy Bolton is on board, but no director seems to be attached currently.

It has previously been reported that the Constantine series might lead into the Justice League Dark series.

However, Deadline states that the deal Abrams made with the distributor is at risk, as Warner Bros Discovery's new head David Zaslav looks to make more cuts across the board and Abrams "hasn't delivered anything significant on either the TV side or film side" since signing the deal.

The character of beloved chain-smoking bisexual detective John Constantine was played by Keanu Reeves in a 2000s movie, while Matt Ryan played him in a short-lived 2014 series before his version was folded into the Arrowverse and became part of the Legends of Tomorrow team.

Legal reasons prevented John Constantine from appearing in the recently-released Netflix adaptation of Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, but former Doctor Who star Jenna Coleman played Johanna Constantine, who is essentially the same character.

The Sandman season 1 is streaming on Netflix.
