Marvel star Jameela Jamil and Snowpiercer star Lena Hall have spoken out following controversial comments made by Sean Bean on the role of intimacy coordinators.

In a recent interview with The Times, Bean said he believes that intimacy coordinators could inhibit his performance.

"I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise,” explained Bean. "It would inhibit me more because it’s drawing attention to things."

During the interview, Bean discussed a particular moment from season 2 of Snowpiercer where he and his co-star Lena Hall get creative with a mango during a sex scene.

"It’s a nice scene, quite surreal, dream-like and abstract. And mango-esque," he said of the scene.

The interviewer pointed out to the Game of Thrones star that the role of intimacy coordinators is to make actors feel safe on set.

"I suppose it depends on the actress. This one had a musical cabaret background, so she was up for anything," he said of his co-star Hall.

This prompted a response from Hall, who tweeted: "Just because I am in theater (not cabaret, but I do perform them every once in a while) does not mean that I am up for anything."

Hall went on to explain that if she feels comfortable on set she doesn't need an intimacy coordinator but she would request one if she felt "gross" or "over exposed".

"I do feel that intimacy coordinators are a welcome addition to the set and think they could also help with the trauma experienced in other scenes."

She-Hulk's Jameela Jamil tweeted a direct response to Bean's comments, saying: "It should only be technical. It’s like a stunt. Our job as actors is to make it not look technical. Nobody wants an impromptu grope…"

West Side Story's Rachel Zegler also spoke out against the comments via Twitter, saying intimacy coordinators establish a safe environment for actors and that "spontaneity in intimate scenes can be unsafe". She ended the tweet by saying "wake up".

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law will stream from August 18 on Disney+.
