Rick and Morty boss Justin Roiland has promised that the show's upcoming sixth season will be back to its best after what he described as a "weird" season five.
Roiland, who co-created the animated show with Dan Harmon, spoke to IGN during San Diego Comic-Con and said fans would love the latest season.
However, he explained his thoughts on season 5, too, which was rocked by the death of Rick and Morty line producer J Michael Mendel, who had also worked with Roiland on Solar Opposites.

"Season 5 was a weird one. We lost Mendel. It was tough. We were thrown for a loop. That was... yeah. If I talk anymore, I'll start crying," Roiland said.
At the time of Mendel's death, Roiland tweeted: "My friend, partner, and line producer Mike Mendel passed away. I am devastated. My heart breaks for his family. I don't know what I’m going to do without you by my side Mike. I'm destroyed."
However, Roiland explained that the show's sixth season will be "a bit more canonical" than season five.
"It really rewards fans of the show that have been watching up to this point. So it's like, I think we're kind of finally back into the rhythm of Rick and Morty," Roiland said.
"I think season 6 is – I didn't particularly think season 5 was bad, but season 6 is f**king amazing. It really is a f**king quality season."
The show's fifth season premiered in June 2021 to acclaim. The season scored 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, with the site's critical consensus reading: "Bold, bombastic, and just the right amount of baffling, Rick and Morty's fifth season is an action-packed journey that may finally put Rick in his place."
That score is actually the show's joint-second best score yet after seasons one and three got 96%. Season two scored 91%, the show's lowest score yet, while season four took 94%.
It remains to be seen what the upcoming sixth season, which will consist of 10 episodes, will score but judging by Roiland's comments, fans should be pretty excited. Season six will premiere on September 4 this year.
Rick and Morty airs on Adult Swim in the US, and on E4 and All 4 in the UK.
