House of the Dragon bosses Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik have opened up about the Game of Thrones prequel going head-to-head with the Lord of the Rings series The Rings of Power, which premieres on Amazon Prime just days after this show lands on HBO.

Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunners revealed that they're huge JRR Tolkien fans, who is the author of the Lord of the Rings books, and that they hope to see an overlap between the two shows' fanbases.

"My hope is that both series work and find a huge fan base and that there's a huge overlap in the fanbase," Condal said.

"I think the more big, expensive – really expensive – fantasies that work on television, the better for us fans because they'll make more of them. I desperately want Rings of Power to work. I'm going to be there watching it the first night it's available, I will watch all of them."

Sapochnik echoed similar sentiments: "Lord of the Rings is great IP and great material. I have no idea what they've done – I didn't make it past The Hobbit 1 – but fantastic. The more the merrier really."

And the teaser hints at a fight for the succession of the throne, as Viserys I announces Rhaenyra as his successor, upsetting Daemon, who believes the throne is his for the taking.

Recently, Doctor Who's Matt Smith, who stars in the show as Daemon Targaryen, revealed during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con that he was smashed in the face with a sword by his co-star Fabien Frankel while rehearsing to film the series.

In that same panel, he also told Radio Times that the wigs in the show were horrible, and that if he was king, this would be his first decree: "I'd allow them to dye their hair. The wigs were a pain in the arse."

Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will air on Amazon Prime Video from September 2, 2022.

Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray. Spin-off House of the Dragon will premiere on August 21, 2022 in the UK.
