Doctor Who's Matt Smith was smashed in the face with a sword by co-star Fabien Frankel on the set of House of the Dragon.

During a panel at the 2022 San Diego Comic-Con, which Digital Spy attended, Frankel revealed that the accident happened during his first rehearsal with Smith, though no further details were given.

Thrones creator George RR Martin recently announced that The Serpent star Fabien Frankel has been cast as Ser Criston Cole. Martin describes Ser Criston as "the common-born son of the steward to the Lord of Blackhaven".

Smith, who is set to play Prince Daemon Targaryen, also revealed during the panel that the wigs they used for House of the Dragon were a nuisance.

"I'd allow them to dye their hair. The wigs were a pain in the arse," he replied (via Radio Times) when asked what his first decree as king would be.

During Comic-Con, Game of Thrones creator George RR Martin was asked about the chances of him appearing in a scene one day.

"I dunno, I mean, the last couple of years since Covid hit I've hardly left my house," he explained. "You also may not know, but there's this book that I'm writing... it's a little late."

Martin was referencing his book The Winds of Winter, the delayed sixth entry in his A Song of Ice and Fire series, which he admitted takes precedence over everything else.

"And then if [House of the Dragon] is still going, who knows, maybe I'll show up. I did do a cameo in the original pilot of Game of Thrones but they reshot most of it, so I was left on the cutting room floor," he joked.

The writer also addressed criticism of Game of Thrones' treatment of women during the panel.

"I don't think Westeros was more anti-woman or misogynistic than real life history. People fear change," he said of his real-life historical influences.

House of the Dragon will premiere in August 2022, airing on HBO in the US, and Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK. Game of Thrones seasons 1-8 are available on DVD and Blu-ray.
