Kaley Ronayne has been promoted to a series regular for season 6 of The Resident, following a wild cliffhanger at the end of season 5.

Ronayne's character Cade had spent season 5 trying to win the heart of Conrad (Matt Czuchry), whose previous partner Nic Nevin had been killed in a car accident at the start of the season (via TVLine).

Season 5 ended on a cliffhanger with Conrad about to choose one of two women, either Cade or Billie (played by Jessica Lucas). Showrunner Andrew Chapman had previously explained the decision behind the love triangle to TVLine.

"We just loved the idea that, at the end of [Season 5], Conrad would be ready to move on, but we weren't going to make that choice yet. We felt like that wouldn't be appropriate to the whole idea of grief and moving on.

"Making the choice is for the premiere of next season, and in fact, we have an idea laid out of what exactly it will be, and how we'll lay it out to the audience. That will be an entirely new idea."

However, Chapman confirmed that Conrad would make his decision in season 6's premiere.

Medical drama The Resident follows doctors and nurses at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The cast also features Manish Dayal, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Bruce Greenwood, and Jane Leeves.

The season 5 finale welcomed back fan-favourite Nic in some flashbacks after the character, played by MCU star Emily VanCamp, exited the medical drama at the start of the season when she died from her injuries sustained during a car crash.
